Background of the Study:
Rural-urban migration is a transformative demographic process impacting traditional leadership structures. In Ihiala, Anambra State, the migration of youth and skilled individuals from rural areas to urban centers disrupts the social fabric and weakens the influence of traditional leadership. Historically, traditional leaders played key roles in governance and conflict resolution; however, migration has altered intergenerational transmission of cultural values, leading to shifts in power dynamics (Okonkwo, 2023; Nwachukwu, 2024). This study examines how migration affects traditional leadership, impacting community organization and cultural continuity (Ifeanyi, 2023).

Statement of the Problem:
Rural-urban migration in Ihiala has significantly impacted traditional leadership structures, diminishing their authority and complicating community governance. The exodus of community members disrupts the transmission of indigenous knowledge and creates challenges in leadership succession (Okonkwo, 2023; Ifeanyi, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To examine the effects of rural-urban migration on traditional leadership structures.
  2. To assess the impact of migration on the authority and legitimacy of traditional leaders.
  3. To propose strategies to reinforce traditional leadership amidst migration challenges.

Research Questions:

  1. How does rural-urban migration affect traditional leadership structures in Ihiala?
  2. What impact does migration have on the authority and legitimacy of traditional leaders?
  3. What measures can reinforce traditional leadership in the face of migration challenges?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Rural-urban migration negatively affects the stability of traditional leadership structures.
  2. Migration reduces the authority of traditional leaders.
  3. Strategic interventions can mitigate migration’s adverse effects on traditional leadership.

Significance of the Study:
This study is significant as it addresses the impact of rural-urban migration on traditional leadership. Its findings will guide policymakers and community leaders in developing strategies to reinforce traditional governance and sustain cultural continuity amid demographic shifts.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is confined to examining the effects of rural-urban migration on traditional leadership in Ihiala Local Government, Anambra State. It focuses on leadership dynamics and cultural continuity, with limitations including reliance on self-reported data and exclusion of other socio-economic influences.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Rural-Urban Migration: The movement of people from rural areas to urban centers.
  2. Traditional Leadership: Culturally based governance systems led by local elders or hereditary figures.
  3. Cultural Continuity: The preservation and transmission of cultural traditions over time.
